Career
Born in, Gillen first excelled at hurling in his youth. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he first linked up with the minor team before later joining the intermediate side. He made his senior debut during the 1970-1971 league.
Gillen enjoyed a brief inter-county career as a non-playing substitute.
At club level Gillen is a one-time All-Ireland medallist with Saint Gillen"s retirement came following the conclusion of the 1971 championship.
