Sean French is a British writer, journalist, and editor. He is also known for the collaboration with his wife Nicci Gerrard. The couple writes psychological thrillers under the pseudonym Nicci French.
Background
Sean French was born on May 28, 1959, in Bristol, South West, United Kingdom. He is a son of Philip French, an art and film critic, and Kersti French (maiden name Molin), a translator and teacher. Sean has two younger brothers named Patrick and Karl.
A child, French spent a lot of time in the cinemas, theaters, and exhibitions following his father, a critic. Among other hobbies of the future writer were rugby, tennis, fishing, swimming, and mushroom picking.
Till the age of nine, Sean had a dream to become a great footballer or tennis player but by the age of twelve, he turned his attention to the career of a writer.
Education
Sean French received secondary education at William Ellis School in London. Then, he entered Christ Church College of the University of Oxford where he studied English literature. While there, French became first at Vogue contest for young writers.
Sean French graduated in 1981 with first class honors.
Sean French started his career in 1984 as a literary editor at the Sunday Times magazine where he spent two years. Then, he occupied the same post at New Society magazine. From 1987 to 2000, French wrote columns with literary reviews for the New Statesman.
In addition to his work of a journalist, French has written and edited several books of his own. In 1992, his name was attached to two volumes – ‘Fatherhood’, an essay collection which he edited; and ‘The French Brothers’ Wild and Crazy Film Quiz Book’, which he wrote with his brothers, Karl and Patrick. French has also produced three biographies, one on 1930s British author Patrick Hamilton, published in 1993, another on French actress Brigitte Bardot, and a third on actress and fitness icon Jane Fonda. He has several novels to his credit, including ‘The Imaginary Monkey’, ‘Dreamer of Dreams’, and ‘Start from Here’.

Quotations:
"It’s eerie looking through the motley list of my publications: books I was asked to write, books I felt a compulsion to write, books I wrote for others, books I wrote for myself, collaborations of different kinds. Somehow they were all necessary – for myself at least – things I needed to say and was able to find different forms to disguise them in. But then your book must look different to you than it does to the reader, because it is the ladder you have climbed up and then kicked away. By the time the reader has got around to liking or disliking it, you’re worrying about the book that doesn’t quite exist yet."
Connections
Sean French was close to his future wife and writing partner, Nicci Gerrard, while studying at Oxford – she attended the university at the same time but they never met there.
They married later, on October 12, 1990. They have four children - Edgar, Anna, Hadley, and Molly. Edgar and Anna are Nicci’s children from her first marriage.
