He played for the Cork senior football team and Munster in the Railway Cup. He was Secretary-General of the Gaelic Athletic Association from 1964 to 1979. After his retirement he continued to work for the Gaelic Athletic Association in a fund-raising role.
As a ballad-singer he had his own radio program on Radio Éireann in the 1950s and toured America four times.
