Seiichir Ikeno was born in Edo, the son of Tameoro, a hatamoto (direct retainer of the Shogunate).
After studying English and French at Tokyo School of Foreign Languages and then attending Meiji English School, graduated from Tokyo University (1890) and stayed behind as assistant professor before being sent to Europe for further studies (1906).
Returning home devoted himself to the study of heredity.
