Seikai Totsuka studied Dutch and Chinese medicine from Siebold, Shinsai Udagawa and others Getting entangled in the Siebold case, he was imprisoned and set free following expulsion of Siebold from Japan after which he became popular.
Seikai Totsuka started practicing medicine at Edo (1831). As his fame grew he became very successful and was chief physician to the Satsuma Clan and ranked among the three masters of Western medicine at that time, the other two being Genboku Ito and Seiken Tsuboi. Was particularly skilled in surgery.
