Seikei Gonda was born in Kurume, Fukuoka Prefecture, the son of a samurai who was known as a scholar of Japanese classics.

At 24, he started travelling Asian countries including Korea, China and Russia for study of their histories. When he was in Shan,ghai, he participated in the first Chinese Revolution.He was imprisoned for suspicion of having supported the rightist assassins in the Blood Brotherhood Case of 1930 and the May 15 Incident in 1931 but was released later.
