1887 graduate Saint St. Petersburg University.
From 1889 worked at Mendeleyev's Laboratory, Saint St. Petersburg University. From 1891 Mendeleyev’s assistant in his Sei and Technical Laboratory, Department of the Navy. 1893 Mendeleyev developed in this laboratory his smokeless powder (pyrocollodion powder).
During 1904-1905 Russo-Japanese War developed at this laboratory technol for production and sampling of trotyl and later tetryl. Developed original percussion-operated mercury fulminate-tetryl capsule detonator. During World War 1 supervised research on production and properties of various new explosives.
Also studied effects of underwater explosions and reulting pressure waves. Organized supplies of raw material for production of explosives. 1919-1923 assistant chairman, Special Technical Commission for the Inspection of Powders and Explosives.
1919-1927 worked for State Institute of Applied Chemistry. From 1926 professor, Naval Academy. Also professor, Leningrad University.
From 1932 again worked for Sei and Technical Naval Laboratory and for Leningrad Technol Institute.
