Senkichiro Hayakawa was born in 1863.
After graduation he became an official of the Finance Ministry. After the Sino-Japanese War (1894-5), he went to Britain on the mission of receiving reparations from China in the capacity of a comptroller of the Bank of Japan. He was also successful in selling Japanese national bonds in that country. Retiring from public service (1900), he joined the Mitsui Company. Appointed managing director of the Mitsui Bank (1901). During the Russo-Japanese War (1904-5), he did much in bond floatation and financial adjustment occasioned by the hostilities. He became board chairman of the Mitsui Bank (1909) and appointed president of the South Manchuria Railway Co.
