The early background of this handsome and talented actor of the early Edo Period is not known.
Tamagawa first played at the Murayama-Matabeza Theater in Kyoto, and that when theaters were banned there in 1661, he migrated to Edo and appeared on the stage of Nakamura-Kanzaburoza Theater. He was at his best when impersonating women. Later Tamagawa retired to Ise Province, where he died.
