He was born May 11, 1827 in Philadelphia. He was the seventh child to Joseph E. Winner, an instrument maker specializing in violins.
Although largely self-taught in the area of music, Winner attended Philadelphia Central High School.
From the age of twenty he taught various instruments, writing some 200 instruction books for his purposes, and he made about 2, 000 arrangements for violin and piano.
He is most likely to be remembered by his songs, many of which were written under various pseudonyms, notably "Alice Hawthorne. "
Among his most famous songs are Listen to the Mocking Bird, Whispering Hope, Where, Oh Where, Is My Little Dog Gone? , and What Is Home Without a Mother?
