Studied at Upper Canada College, Toronto. Royal Military College, Kingston, Canada.
Served in 4th Battalion South. Staffordshire Regiment, retiring with rank of Major, and joined the Royal Canadian Regiment, 1888. Served as Aide-de-camp to Earl of Aberdeen when Governor-General of Canada, and in the South African Campaign as Aide-de-camp to Field-Marshal Earl Roberts (despatches twice, medal with four clasps, Companion of Saint Michael and Saint George, Brevet of Lieutenant-Colonel). Aide-de-camp to Hassaram Rijhumal H. The Prince of Wales during his tour through Canada, 1901.
Decorated for services in South African Campaign.
