Career

Ordained to Presbyterian ministry June 2, 1852. Chaplain American Seaman’s Friends Society at Lahaina, Island of Maui, 1853-1862. Missionary American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, Hana, Maui, 1862-1865.

Principal Lahainaluna Seminary, 1865-1877.

Editor The Friend, Honolulu, H.I., 1887-1902 In September 1883, discovered Corona caused by Krakatoa Eruption, and since known in Europe as “Cercle de Bishop,” or Bishop’s Ring. Received 3d Warner prize ($50), 1884, for essay on Cause of Red Glows (Krakatoa).
