Career

Teacher, Litchfield, Connecticut, 1803-1804. Amanuensis (secretary) to his father (president of Yale). Tutor at Yale, 1806-1810.

Practiced law, New Haven, Connecticut, 1810-1816. Licensed to preach by West Association of Ministers of New Haven, 1816. Chaplain United States Senate, 1816-1817.

Ordained to ministry. Pastor Park Street Church, Boston, 1817-1826. Traveled to Europe, 1824-1825.

Founder (with brother Henry) boarding school for boys, New Haven, 1828-1831. Teacher, president Hamilton College, 1833-1835. Agent Pennsylvania Colonization Society, 1835-1838.
