Biography
A descendant of prominent Russian doctors. After graduating from the Moscow State University (Geographical Faculty, specialty "Economic Geography", 1961) he worked at the Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the USSR Academy of Sciences, was a scientific and technical employee, head of the cartographic group, since 1977 he was the head of the sector of composite analysis and since 1986 he headed the department of the military-economic and military-political studies.
He defended his thesis on military-technical problems (1970) and doctoral thesis - "Methodology for assessing the combined military power of blocs and associations" (1983). He prepared a series of works on the military-economic potential of the United States, as well as a memorandum for the State Planning Committee of the USSR "On the shifts in the distribution of US production."
In the early 1990s he headed the Institute for National Security and Strategic Studies. In 1994-1995 he was chairman of the Moscow city organization of the party Democratic Choice of Russia, a member of the DDA's political council, a member of the State Committee for Military Reforms, the Advisory Council of the Russian League of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, the European-Atlantic Association, the Foreign Policy Council of the Russian Foreign Ministry, directors of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (London).
On March 20, 1995, after the murder of VladislavListiev, he took up the post of General Director of the First Channel (ORT).
In September 1997, he resigned from the post of head of ORT because of disagreements with the shareholder of the First Channel Boris Berezovsky.
He was one of the largest collectors of painting in Russia. In his collection there were pictures of the largest Russian and European artists of the XIX-XX centuries.
He was repeatedly married. One of his wives was actress Victoria Fedorova, daughter of the famous film actress Zoe Fedorova.
He died on September 13, 2001 during a holiday in Cyprus. He was buried in Moscow at the Novodevichy Cemetery.
