Sergei Vladimirovich Chekanov is a Belarusian-American experimental particle physicist at Argonne National Laboratory. His research spans quantum chromodynamics, deep-inelastic scattering, collider phenomenology, and searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. He has contributed to the ZEUS, L3, and ATLAS collaborations and developed scientific-computing software and textbooks.
Background
Sergei Vladimirovich Chekanov was born on June 9, 1969, in Minsk, Belarus. He is the son of Vladimir Sergeevich Chekanov and Nina Konstantinovna Chekanova. Before beginning his scientific career, he served in the Soviet Army from 1987 to 1989 and attained the rank of senior sergeant.
Education
Chekanov studied theoretical physics at Belarusian State University in Minsk and received a master's degree in 1992. From 1992 to 1995 he pursued postgraduate research in theoretical high-energy physics at the Academy of Sciences of Belarus, with work related to quantum chromodynamics. He subsequently undertook doctoral research in experimental particle physics at the University of Nijmegen, now Radboud University Nijmegen, in the Netherlands, receiving a Ph.D. in 1998.
Career
Chekanov's professional work combines experimental particle physics, large-scale scientific data analysis, and software development. During his doctoral period in the Netherlands, he participated in the L3 Collaboration at CERN, analyzing electron-positron collision data and contributing to calorimeter responsibilities. From 1997 to 1998 he held postdoctoral appointments associated with the High Energy Physics Institute and the University of Nijmegen and with Argonne National Laboratory. He joined Argonne's High Energy Physics Division in 1998 and has continued working there as a particle physicist.
At DESY, Chekanov worked with the ZEUS Collaboration at the HERA accelerator, contributing to the construction and operation of detector systems and to analyses of deep-inelastic scattering. He served as a coordinator or co-convener of the ZEUS QCD group and contributed to measurements involving parton structure, jet production, heavy flavor, strange-particle production, and other QCD phenomena. At CERN's Large Hadron Collider he has worked with the ATLAS experiment on analyses including prompt photons, top-quark processes, searches for new physics, and detector and computing support. From 2008 to 2014 he led the computer group of Argonne's High Energy Physics Division and supported the ATLAS Analysis Support Center.
Alongside his experimental research, Chekanov has developed scientific-computing tools, including the jHepWork and DataMelt environments, and founded the jWork.ORG community portal for scientific computing and education. His research and software work address numerical computation, visualization, data mining, statistical analysis, and the processing of large experimental data sets.
Achievements
Contributor and co-author of more than one hundred professional physics articles based on data from major international experiments, including LEP, HERA, and the Large Hadron Collider.
Developed the jHepWork and DataMelt scientific-computing environments for numerical computation, statistics, data mining, and scientific visualization.
Led the computer group of Argonne National Laboratory's High Energy Physics Division from 2008 to 2014 and supported computing and analysis infrastructure for the ATLAS experiment.
Served as a coordinator or co-convener of the QCD group of the ZEUS Collaboration.
