Graduated from the Frunze Naval School, 1931.
Joined the Red Navy, 1927. From 1932,
commander of military ships and naval units. During World War II, commander in the Azov sea, head of the defence of Novorossiisk, 1942.
Danube flotilla commander, 1944. From 1945, in the Black Sea, 1948-1951, as Chief of Staff, and later as Commander of the Black Sea Fleet. Deputy Chief Commander of the Navy, 1955.
For almost 30 years, Commander in Chief of the Navy, 1956-1985 (and Deputy Minister of Defence). Organized the transformation of the USSR into a great naval power. Retired 1985. Has done more for the growth of the Russian Navy than anybody since Peter the Great.

The emphasis on peaceful coexistence doesn’t mean that the Soviet Union accepted a static world with clear lines. Socialism is inevitable and the "correlations of forces" were moving towards socialism.
