Graduated from the Petersburg Theatre School, 1900.
Dancer at the Mariinskii Theatre until 1912. At the same time studied in the Drama department of the Petersburg Theatre School under V. Davydov and A. Sanin. Toured around Russia and abroad.
From 1909, assistant to Mikhail Fokin. From 1909-1929, choreographer, administrator and from time to time dancer with Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. Danced in Leonid Miasin’s productions (Shakhriar in Shekherazada, 1910, Russian merchant in Volshebnaia Lavka, 1919).
After Diaghilev’s death, choreographer with Les Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo, the Original Ballet Russe, the Ballet Russe de Colonel de Basil, and others. With his wife, the dancer L. Chernyshova, revived Mikhail Fokin’s productions for Sadler’s Wells and La Scala: L’Oiseau de Feu, Les Sylphides, and Petrushka in 1954, 1955 and 1957. His book, The Diaghilev Ballet, 1909-1929, published in 1953, became a classic.
