From 1892-1896, studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture under S. Ivanov and S. Volnukhin. From 1899-1902, studied at the Petersburg Academy of Arts (corresponding member, 1916). Member of the Mir Iskusstva group and of the Union of Russian Artists.
His first sculpture was Kamneboets, 1898, one copy of which was bought by the Moscow Sokolnicheskii Museum, the other in bronze was bought privately. After the October Revolution 1917, contributed to the ‘monumental propaganda’ ordered by the Soviet government. In 1924, emigrated and lived until 1945 in the USA. After World War II, returned to the Soviet Union.
Honorary member of the USSR Academy of Arts, 1954. People’s Artist, 1958. Was proclaimed a father figure of socialist realism in sculpture.
