Joined the Red Army, 1926, and the Bolshevik Party, 1930. During World War II, as Head of the Operations Department of the General Staff, worked closely with Stalin. Chief of the General Staff, 1948-1952.
Deputy Minister of Defence. Several other high posts in the General Staff. Non-voting member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, 1952-1956.
