Sergei Matveevich Shtemenko


Sergei Shtemenko, USSR General.


Shtemenko, Sergei was born in 1907.


Graduated from the Mechanization Academy of the Red Army, 1937, and from the Academy of the General Staff, 1940.


Joined the Red Army, 1926, and the Bolshevik Party, 1930. During World War II, as Head of the Operations Department of the General Staff, worked closely with Stalin. Chief of the General Staff, 1948-1952.

Deputy Minister of Defence. Several other high posts in the General Staff. Non-voting member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, 1952-1956.
