Farmhand, worker in a sawmill, 1925-1929. At the age of 18, joined the Communist Party. Komsomol and party worker in Penza Oblast’ during the collectivisation campaign, 1929-1934.
Various senior posts in party and propaganda departments of various governmental organizations, 1935-1948. In 1946, graduated from the Moscow Teachers’ Training Institute. Director of the Party School of the Central Committee of the Moldavian CP, 1948-1956.
Member of the Central Committee of the Moldavian CP, 1956. Invited to Moscow by Brezhnev. High position in the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
Deputy Rector of the Moscow Higher Party School on the Central Committee, 1960-1965. From 1966 until
1983, in charge of culture, science and education on the Central Ctee. His utterly reactionary role in Soviet cultural life has been openly acknowledged in the Soviet press only under Gorbachev, but throughout his 18-year rule Soviet scientists consistently used their right to a secret vote to reject his candidature as Academician, despite strong pressure from the Politburo.
In 1983, Andropov quietly sent him into retirement.
