He played 174 games in Soviet Top League and scored 34 goals. His position was midfielder. He started his coaching career in 2001 when he worked at Russian Football Club Uralan Elista.
His first club to manage was Football Club Irtysh of Kazakhstan Premier League.
He started season 2008 with Football Club Atyrau, but was sacked shortly because of poor team performance. Managerial On 17 June 2015, Volgin was sacked as manager of Football Club Akzhayik.
