1919-1923 professor, Samara, then Leningrad University. From 1930 head Department of 20th-Century Russian Literature, Pushkin Center, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. Specialized in folklore, 17th-18th century Russian lit, lit theory, journalism, bibliography and interpretation: most important works were bibliography and interpretation of Gorky and studies of Gorky and Chekhov's plays.
