Expert on northern regions of Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics. Explored north of Arkhangelsk Oblast, Kolguev Island, Novaya Zemlya, Kolyma and the Chukot Peninsula. Pioneer of Soviet professional hunting techniques.
Made major contribution to industry exploitation of game and wildfowl reserves. Also specialized in taxonomy, ecology and biogeography af birds. Wrote over 2,000 works and compiled large ornithological collection, which is now in the Zoological Museum of Moscow University.
