1891 graduate Medical Faculty, Moscow University.
After graduate worked at A.A.Bobrov’s Clinic. 1895 defended doctor’s thesis on tetanus. 1903-1936 head, Chair of Hospital Surgery Clinic, Military Medical Academy.
In early stages of career specialized in bacteriology and immunology. 1892 obtained and used first Russian cholera antitoxin. Also obtained tetanus toxin and antitoxin and proved that tetanus does not occur if both axe injected simultanously.
1893 obtained anti-tetanus serum for medical use. While abroad studied aseptic operation techniques under Schimmelbaum and ureter cystoscopy and cauterization techniques under Kasper. Also studied new methods of endoscopy.
Devised a number of new operations, including pyelotomy in situ and subcapsular nephrectomy. Invented new surgical instruments, including renal clamps and spatulas. Became known as the father of Russian urology for his major research on surgery of the urinary and biliary tracts.
Wrote classic textbooks on surgery and urology. Also did research on abdominal and brain surgery. Developed trepaning techniques, operations on the Gasserov ganglion and the hypophysis, and a technique for removing brain tumors.
Made studies of spine surgery. Used all newly developed methods for treating malignants tumors, including mobile x-ray equipment for irradiating the operating area during their removal. Tested methods of treating neoplasms by figuration and with high-frequency electr currents.
Was one of first surgeons to use intravenous narcosis (hedonal). His clinic was also one of the first in Russia to work on the problem of blood transfusion, to operate on the sympathetic nervous system and to study trophic ulcerous processes. Toward end of life studied problems of surgery of the central and peripheral nervous systems
Foreign a number of years sci director and director, Leningrad State Institute of Surgical Neuropathology. Company-founder, journal Novyy khirurgicheskiy arkhiv, which was virtually the first Soviet surgery journal to appear after World War 1. 1923 co-founder, journal Urologiya.
1907 founder-dim, first Russian Urological Social. Developed the best traditions of Russian clinical medical, combining vast practical experience with a stictly sci approach to the patient and a precise grasp of pathological processes. As a surgeon he was noted for the extreme precision of nis operating technique, which derived from his excellent knowledge of anatomy and pathology.
Foundet a major school of surgery which brought forth scores of leading surgeons. Wrote over 120 works.
