1870-1878 astronomer at Pulkovo Observatory. 1871-1882 studied motion of Jupiter’s moons. 1874 attended expedition to Eastern Siberia to observe Venus pass across the disk of the Sun.
1881 astronomical observatory at Saint St. Petersburg University, built to his design, was put into operation. 1889-1924 professor, Saint St. Petersburg (Petrograd) University. 1882-1897 at Saint St. Petersburg, Domkin (near Luga), Gurzufa and Abastuman’ made over 5,000 observations of double stars.
Results of these observations published in 5 volume. Advanced a new and now widley used analytical method for computing the orbits of double stars. 1890 helped found Russian Astronomical Social and for a number of years was its chairman.
1901 directed wort on determination of astronomical points in Siberia. Designed ”sun ring,” the simplest instrument for determining time and latitude. Wrote popular books on astronomy for general public.
Also textbooks on mathematics and cosmography. Compiled widely-used mathematical tables. Also specialist in theory and practice of gardening and bee-keeping.
