During the First World War, the family moved to the village Shumiha, Kurgan region, where he spent his childhood and youth.
When he ended seven-years school, Sergey worked on the railway station. Then in 1927, he moved to the city of Zlatoust, Chelyabinsk region. In 1927-1931 he lived in Zlatoust, worked as a mechanic in a motor factory.
In April 1, 1931 he was a cadet Orenburg Pilot School, which he graduated from it in 1932. Then he was an instructor-pilot at a
military school.
