Began lit career after graduate. 1921-1925 lit director, Moscow Chamber Theater. Wrote articles on this theater's actors and productions.
1921 began teaching course on history of West European lit and theater. Taught at various theaters (including Mayakovskiy Theater) and at Institute of Philosophy. History and Literature; from 1934 taught at State Institute of Stagecraft.
Specialized in the history' of West European, notably Spanish and Slavic theater, and was one of first Soviet scholars to do research on East bloc theater. Wrote numerous press articles
