1903-1913 actor and set designer in Ukraine theater. From 1913 in film work. Designed sets for many pre-revol Russian films, in many of which he also took part as director and actor.

Worked on over 100 Soviet films. 1923-1930 set designer, Russian International Workers’ Aid Film Studio. Designed or helped design sets for: Polikushka (1919).
Aelita (1924); Mat’ (Mother) (1926). Sorok pervyy (The Forty-First) (1927). Konets Sankt-Peterburga (The End of Street Saint St. Petersburg) (1927).
Don Diyego i Pelageya (Don Diego and Pclagea) (1928). Potomol Chingiskhana (Descendant of Genghis Khan) (1929);Prazdnik Svyatogo Iorgena (The Feast of Saint Jorgen) (1930). Also directed or co-directed a number of films, for many of which he designed the sets and wrote the scripts.
