1900 graduate Saint St. Petersburg University.
1900-1902 worked for Rail Steel Research Commission, Saint St. Petersburg Institute of Means of Communication. From 1902 worked at Saint St. Petersburg (Leningrad University, where he founded a laboratory for the chemical processing of oil and coal in 1925. 1908-1913 did research on the polymerization of hydrocarbons in the divinyl and propadiene series.
1909-1910 published papers on the polymerization of isoprene and diisopropenyl. 1910 optained first rubberoid product from divinyl (butadiene). 1913 defended master's thesis on biethylene hydrocarbons, which provided the sci basis of industry rubber synthesis.
1912-1915 also worked on the production of toluene by oil pyrolysis, developing a method used at a benzene and toluene plant built in Baku after World War 1. 1914 began research on the polymerization of hydrocarbons of acetylene and ethylene which provided the basis for modern industry methods of obtaining butyl rubber and poly isobutylene. From 1916 professor, Petrograd (Leningrad) Military Medical Academy.
1921-1923, together with associate, did research on the properties of sodium divinyl rubber, for which he found active fillers. 1926-1928, in government-sponsored competition to find best method of industry rubber synthesis, supervised research which led to prize-winning method of obtaining sodium divinyl rubber based on the polymerization of divinyl alcohol with metallic sodium. 1928-1930 founder-director, Synthetic Rubber Laboratory.
Trained numerous rubber chemists. Several sci establishments now bear his name:.
