1904 graduate Moscow University.
1900-1910 worked for newspaper “Russkiye vedomosti”. 1913-1923 co-ed, journal “Golos minuvshego”. Helped edit collective historical works.
Velikaya reforma (The Great Reform) (1911). Otechestvennaya voyna i russkoye obshchestvo (The Fatherland War and Russian Society) (1912) and Masonstvo v vego proshlom i nastoyashchem (Masonism Past and Present) (1912). Opposed to 1917 October Revol.
1920 sentenced to death in trial of “Tactical Center”, fabricated by the Extraordinary Commission Against Counterrevolution, Sabotage and Speculation. Sentence commuted to 10 years’ imprisonment. 1921 released upon intercession of anarchist Krapotkin.
1922 rearrested; 1923 allowed to leave Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics on condition that he would never return. Lived in Berlin and from 1924 in Paris. Published journals “Golos minuvshego na chuzhoy storone”, “Bor’ba za Rossiyu” and “Rossiyskiy demokrat”.
