From 1887 lecturer, Saint St. Petersburg University. 1894—1915 professor, Kiev University. 1918-1923 professor, Tbilisi University.
1923-1929 director, Timiryazev Biological Institute, Moscow. Did research on the morphology and taxonomy of mosses and parasitic fungi. Began embryological research on the fertilization process in angiosperms after detecting chalazogamy in monochlamydeous plants while studying the development of collar-rot in birch ovaries.
1898 discovered double fertilization in angiosperms. Also did cytological research on the structure of cell nuclei and chromosomes.
Member, Ukraine Academy of Sciences from 1924. Honorary member, Swedish Academy of Sciences, Uppsala, from 1917.
