1927-1937 taught at various higher educational establishments in Leningrad, and from 1937 in Moscow. From 1952 head, Speech Standards Section, Institute of Linguistics, then from 1958 Institute of Russian Language, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. Helped compile Ushakov’s Tolkovyy slovar’ russkogo yazyka (Explanatory' Dictionary of the Russian Language) (4 volume, 1935-1940).
1949 compiled standard-setting one-volume Slovar’ russkogo yazyka (A Dictionary of the Russian Language), containing over 50,000 entries. Specialized in 18th—19th Century Russian lit language, historical and modem lexicology, language of individual writers, orthography and orthoepy, linguistic standards, et cetera Edited Orfograficheskiy slovar' russkogo yazyka (Orthographic Dictionary of the Russian Language) (1956.
