He graduated from the Law Department of Moscow University (1895), the Moscow Conservatory (1901, the class of S.I. Taneev, M.M. Ippolitov-Ivanov and V.V. Safonov).
Educator (since 1906), professor (since 1907) of the Moscow Conservatory in the instrumentation and composition department, head of the department (1932-1941, 1943-1956). Head of the musical part of the Voronezh Free Theatre (1918-1919), where he was the author of music for the opera-ballet-drama production of Rus (November 1918). One of the organizers of music broadcasting (Moscow, 1925). He performed with concerts in Voronezh (1935).
