Zaranko studied in Venizyanava in the middle of 1830, finished the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts in 1834.
In 1843 he became an academician. In 1856 Zaranko became the professor of Moscow school of painting, sculpture and architecture. His best picturesque works are characterized by exactness and realistic manner of painting. He made pictures of A. Venizuyanav(artist) (1830), V. Petrov (singer) (1840), F. Tolstoy (sculptor-medallist) (1850). He also painted group and family portraits. “The appearance hall of jurisprudence college with groups of teachers and pupils” stood out by group portraits (1841), “The interior view of Marine Nikolsky cathedral” was from interior pictures (1843). Zaranko worked out the system of teaching, which was mainly based on learning the literature, exactness in the rendering of visible light. He played a great role in the education of a whole generation of artist-realists. V.R. Peroy, U.Y. Mayakovsky and other famous Russian artists were among his pupils.
