1895 graduate Physics and Mathematics Faculty, Moscow University.
1897 arrested for revol propaganda among Moscow workers and exiled for two years to Vyatka Province. Then worked in Crimea. Founded national sci museum in Simferopol’.
Studied the fishing industry of Tavrida Province. 1902-1914 directed Sebastopol Biological Station, Academy of Sciences, 1913 published monograph K voprosu ob izuchenii zhizni Chyomogo morya (Studying the Life of the Black Sea), for which Moscow University made him a Master of Zoology. In this work he described the ecology, fauna and biocenoses of the Black Sea and laid down the laws governing their distribution.
In the northwestern sector of the Black Sea discovered beds of red seaweed which enabled him to organize the industry production of iodine. 1914 founded first Chair of Hydrobiology at Moscow Agric Institute (now Timiryazev Agric Academy). 1924 founded Chair of Hydrobiology at Moscow University.
