From 1906 assistant head, Shatilov Experimental Station, Orel Province. 1909-1927 worked at Selection Station, Moscow Agric Institute (later Timiryazev Agric Academy). 1910 sci research in Germany, Austria and Sweden.
From 1920 professor, Timiryazev Agric Academy, where he founded the Griboyedov Selection Station. From 1924 professor, Moscow University. Head, Selection Department, Moscow Oblast Agric Station.
By cross-breeding and analytical selection produced several high-yield varieties of horticultural, grain and other crops. Bred “Inexhaustible” and “Zhegalov” varieties of sugarpod garden pea, “Northern Pioneer” maize, “Kolkhoznitsa” cabbage, et cetera
