Sergey Alexandrovich Garin was a Russian poet, playwright, prosaist, and screenwriter.
Background
Sergey Alexandrovich Garin (real surname - Garfild) was born on August 22, 1873, in Moscow City, Russian Federation. His father came from a Russified Scottish family, director of the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. His mother - Lvova by birth - was a nephew of a composer A.F.Lvov.
Education
Sergey Alexandrovich studied at Zaikonospassky Theological Specialized School in Moscow (since 1883) and the Seminary (1887-1890); then he left home, became a sailor, sailed on merchant ships. In 1898 Sergey Alexandrovich graduated from Saint Petersburg Naval College with a diploma of a long-distance navigator.
Career
At the age of 19, Sergey Alexandrovich joined the revolutionary movement. He emigrated more than once; worked in large foreign factories, sailed. Since 1903 a member of the RSDLP. During the Russian-Japanese war (1904-1905) drafted into the fleet, in 1905 went into reserve.
Sergey Alexandrovich began to be published in 1895 (the poem Skitalets, Nablyudatel'). In the 1900s he was published in the newspaper Birzhevye Vedomosti, Peterburgsky LISTOK, Nizhny Novgorod LISTOK, etc. In 1901 a collection of poems and short stories by Garin Iz pesen zemli i morya was published in Saint Petersburg.
In 1905 Sergey Alexandrovich worked in the newspaper Vladivostoksky listok. In 1906 he edited the newspaper Ussuriyskaya Zhizn (which was closed on February 1907). Then the poem The Russian-Japanese War printed in Vladivostok was confiscated by censorship. Sergey Alexandrovich lived for a while in Saint Petersburg, then was deported.
In 1909-1910 he edited the Ekaterinoslav newspaper Novaya kopeika and Yuzhnaya Rossiya (both were also closed). Worked in the newspaper Dneprovsky krai. In 1910 in Russkoe bogatstvo appeared Garin's story Kak oni umirali. Iz letopisi minuvshei voiny, the novel U dalnego morya was published also there. During these years, Sergey Alexandrovich was published mainly in weekly magazines and newspapers, including Utrennyaya Rossiya. In 1914 drafted into the military service. In 1917 - chairman of the Helsingfors Council; in 1918 a marine agent and plenipotentiary representative in Denmark for prisoners of war. Sergey Alexandrovich was at party work in the Volga region and in the south of Russia. In 1921 - Commissioner of Defense of the Black and Azov Seas, then Commissioner of the Naval Inspectorate of the Far Eastern Republic; in 1924 - commissar of the naval forces of the Far Eastern Republic. Since 1925 Sergey Alexandrovich took an active part in the literary life of Saint Petersburg.
Religion
His mother was very religious, and at her urging Sergey Alexandrovich studied at Zaikonospassky Theological Specialized School and Seminary.
Politics
After the February Revolution of 1917, Sergey Alexandrovich headed the Helsingfors branch of the RSDLP, a member of the 1st All-Russian Central Executive Committee. After the events of July 1917, he was arrested.
