In 1960 he graduated from the correspondence department of the Philological Faculty of Moscow State University. M.V. Lomonosov.
He worked as a librarian, photographer, journalist, forester, artist, editor-in-chief of the journal Krugozor. Since 1969 he was a member of the CPSU. He headed the Moscow City Group of the ELEP in the 2003 State Duma elections.
The first major publication - the story "We Live Only Two Times" (1969), printed under the pseudonym S.Zinin in the magazine "Volga". Since 1979 he is a member of the USSR JV. In 1981 he graduated in absentia from the Academy of Social Sciences under the Central Committee of the CPSU and in the same year retired from the post of editor-in-chief of literary broadcasts of the All-Union Radio in order to devote himself entirely to literary work. Since 1987, until his death, he taught at the Literary Institute A.M. Gorky, in 1992-2006 served as rector. Since 1994, member of the board, since 1999 - secretary of the Writers' Union of Russia. In 1998 he was elected as a chairman of the Council of the International Book Publishers, in 2010 he was elected president of the International Union of Public Organizations of Book Lovers. He was a vice-president of the Academy of Russian Literature.
