Sergey Averintsev was born on December 10, 1937 in Moscow. He is a son of the biologist Sergei Vasilyevich Averintsev (1875-1957) and Natalia Vasilyevna Averintseva.
He graduated from the Department of Classical Philology of the Philological Faculty of Moscow State University named after MV Lomonosov (1961, diploma work "Principles of biography at Plutarch"). In 1967 he defended his Ph.D. in Philology ("Plutarch and the Ancient Biography: the Place of the Classics of the Genre in the History of the Genre", supervisor - SI Radzig), in 1979 - the Doctoral ("The Poetics of Early Byzantine Literature"). After graduating from postgraduate studies he worked as a scientific editor at the publishing house Mysl (1964-1966), then as a junior research fellow at the State Institute of Art Studies (1966-1971).
The translator, poet, lecturer, member of the USSR SP (1985), Russian PEN Center (1995), chairman of the Russian Biblical Society (since 1990), international Mandelstam Society (since 1991), president of the Association of Culturologists, member of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences. He used to be the corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (since December 23, 1987) and full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (since May 22, 2003) in the Department of History and Philology (Section of Language and Literature).
He was a member of the editorial board of the series of books "Library of Ancient Literature", published by the publishing house "Fiction". In 1971-1991 he was a senior researcher at the IMI named after M. Gorky of the USSR Academy of Sciences, in 1981-1991 he was in charge of the history of ancient literature. In 1989-1991, People's Deputy of the USSR, he worked out a law on freedom of conscience. In 1989-1994 - Professor of the Department of History and Theory of World Culture of the Faculty of Philosophy, Moscow State University, in 1992-2004 - Head of the Department of Christian Culture of the Institute of World Culture of Moscow State University. In 1992-1994 - Chief Researcher of the Institute of Higher Humanitarian Studies. EM Meletinsky RSUH. Since 1994 - Professor of the Institute of Slavic Studies of the University of Vienna. He was a regular parishioner of St. Nicholas Cathedral in Vienna. In 1998 he was awarded the title of Honorary Professor of the Kiev-Mohyla Academy. He was married to philologist Natalia Petrovna Zembatova-Averintseva (born 1939).
In May 2003 suffered a massive heart attack after which was in a coma for almost ten months.
He died on February 21, 2004 in Vienna (Austria). According to the will, he was buried in Moscow at the Danilovsky cemetery.
