Setsuo Tsukahara was born on the 15th of March, 1921, in Korea.
Tsukahara briefly attended Tokyo Academy of Music, and then took practical training under such masters as Kiyoshi Nobutoki, Tomojiro Ikeuchi and Hideo Saito. At the age of 27, Setsuo Tsukahara traveled to the Unites States, where he proceeded his studies at Columbia University and Manhattan Music Academy, New York. Studied under Aaron Copland, and underwent conducting with Erich Rainsdorf.
Upon returning from the USA, Setsuo Tsukahara founded the Tsukahara Symphonic Orchestra, to become its conductor in 1953, that opened with a concert at Nihon Theater in 1954. His second concert which was held in Hibiya Public Hall, three months later, was broadcast to the United States through the network of NBC. Among his compositions is Ikoku-no Odoriko (Dancers of Foreign Country), Shi-no Shvma, Kan- ici-no ShiTna (Islands of Death and Joy).
