In 2010 Dixon was a candidate in the Democratic primary for United States Representative from Illinois"s 7th congressional district, a seat currently held by Danny K. Davis. She earned a Bachelor in Criminal Justice from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1985. Prior to entering politics, Dixon worked in various capacities for Cook County Hospital, American Airlines, General Electric, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and Ada South. She left working to campaign for alderman.
Alderman Dixon was sworn into office on May 21, 2007. Three years into her first (four-year) term as alderman, Dixon challenged incumbent Congressman Danny K. Davis in the February 2010 Democratic primary.
In 2011, she was defeated in a run-off election against Michael Doctorate. Chandler.
