After serving in the United States. Military during World World War II he returned to his study of art at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. He spent most of his career (1950–1986) as editorial cartoonist for the Spokane, Washington Spokesman-Review. Examples of his work are in the permanent collection of the Northwest Museum of Art & Culture in Spokane.
His father was the noted Chicago Tribune editorial cartoonist John T. McCutcheon.
