Sheila Keenan was born on April 8, 1953, in New Jersey, United States. The writer has five brothers and sisters.
One of the major events in the family of Sheila Keenan, when a child, was the television game show ‘Jeopardy!’. In an ever-changing group of siblings, they try to outshout each other with right-answer questions. As a result, the head of a young Sheila was full of facts.
Keenan studied at the University of Massachusetts where she received her Master of Arts degree in English literature. Then, the author learned comparative religion and history.
Sheila Keenan worked as a director of Children’s Express extracurricular journalism program from 1986 to 1989. The same year, she occupied the post of editorial supervisor at Scholastic publishing house in New York City. She had served in that capacity for four years.
It was in 1993 when Keenan started her career of a writer. Her own selected works include ‘Greetings from the 50 States: How They Got Their Names’, ‘Animals in the House: A History of Pets and People’, ‘O, Say Can You See? America’s Symbols, Landmarks, and Inspiring Words’, and ‘Gods, Goddesses, and Monsters: A Book of World Mythology’ among others.
Besides, she collaborated with David Macaulay on his ‘How It Works’ illustrated nonfiction series for beginners.
In addition to writing her own books, Sheila Keenan has worked as a travel editor, developmental editor for a reading series, picture book editor, a book packer, and marketing consultant.
Nowadays, the author lives and works in New York City.
