(Excerpt from With Our Soldiers in France The world is at...)
Excerpt from With Our Soldiers in France The world is at war. Already more than a score of nations, representing a population of over a thousand millions, or two-thirds of the entire human race, are engaged in a life-and-death struggle on the bloody battlefields of Europe, Asia, and Africa. No man can stand in the mouth of that volcano on a battle front, or meet the trains pouring in with their weary freight of wounded after a battle, or stand by the operating tables and the long rows of cots in the hospitals, or share in sympathy the hardship and suffering of the men who are fighting for us, and remain unmoved. The man must be dead of soul to whom the war does not present a mighty moral challenge. It arraigns our past manner of life and our very civilization. It gives us a new angle of observation, a new point of view, a new test of values. It furnishes a possible moral judgment by which we can weigh our life in the balance and see where we have been found wanting. These brief sketches are only fragmentary and have of necessity been hastily written. The writer has been asked to state his impression of the work among the men in France. He did not go there to write but to work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. (This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

administrator educator Missionary author
Eddy, Sherwood was born on January 19, 1871 in Leavenworth, Kansas, United States. Son of George Alfred and Margaret L. (Norton) Eddy.
He attended Phillips Andover Academy, graduated from Yale University in 1891 and then studied at Princeton Theological Seminary, graduating in 1896.
Eddy married Alice Maud Harriet Arden (1873–1945) on November 10, 1898. They were the parents of two children, Margaret and Arden. After his first wife"s death, he would marry Catherine Louise Gates in 1946.
Eddy was one of the first of sixteen thousand student volunteers who emerged from the leading universities of the United States. and Europe to serve as missionaries in the far flung corners of the world.
Working among the poor and outcasts of India he mastered the Tamil language and served as a traveling evangelist among the students and masses of southern India beginning in Palamcottah for the first 15 years of his missionary service. He spent the next 15 years doing student evangelistic work across Asia - from China, Japan, and the Philippines, through the Near East to Turkey, Palestine, Iraq, Egypt, and then to czarist and later to Soviet Russia.
Later it changed its name to Frontier Fellowship and then to Christian Action. The main supporters of the Fellowship in the early days included Eddy, Eduard Heimann, Paul Tillich and Rose Terlin.
Although not Communist, the group acknowledged Karl Marx"s social philosophy.
As a national secretary of the Young Men’s Christian Association Eddy worked in an honorary capacity among students in Japan, of Korea, China, India, the Near East, and Russia. He founded the Delta and Providence Cooperative Farms with Reverend Sam H. Franklin in 1936. Eddy died on November 4, 1963 at Jacksonville, Illinois.
