Studied at the Shoheiko, the Shogunate college in Edo, in youth and studied under Ranrin Nakamura.
He was among the Three Greatest Confucians of the Kansei Era, the two others being Seiri Koga and Nishu Вito. Kien Minagawa and Seisai Nishiyori, Confucian scholars, were among his friends.
Became an instructor at the Shoheiko at the invitation of the Shogunate (1788). Helped Sadanobu Matsudaira, a Shogunate Minister, draft the decree against Confucian learning other than the Chutze School.
