Shibayama Mochitoyo was a kugyô (court noble) known both as a poet, and as a kokugaku scholar after the school of Motoori Norinaga.
Shibayama Mochitoyo was born in 1742, Kyoto, Japan. He was the son of Shigetoyo.
Shibayama Mochitoyo held the high Court rank of Gon-Dainagon (Vice-Minister). He was a scholar of Japanese classics. As a waka poet, he excelled his father. Although Court poets of his time disdained poets outside the Court, Mochitoyo liked the poetry of Norinaga Moto-ori and was an intimate friend of his.
