Shinayama Ryosuke was born in 1834, Satsuma (Kagoshima Prefecture), Japan.
An antiforeign pro-Imperialist, he went to Kyoto (1862) as a member of the suite of Hisamitsu Shimazu, father of his lord. While in Kyoto, he was involved in the Teradaya coup of Loyalist samurai and was ordered to go back to Kagoshima. He was pardoned because of his participating in the battle against British warships which bombarded Kagoshima in June, 1863.
He went to Edo to be attached to his lord's residence (1865). He conferred secretly with Loyalist samurai of other clans in his lord's residence in Mita, Edo, on plans of overthrowing the Shogunate. Shogunate police made a surprise raid on his residence and arrested Ryosuke.
He died in prison, without having renounced the pro-Imperialist cause in spite of tortures to which he was subjected.
