After graduation from the university Shigamitsu was immediately appointed professor of Fourth Higher School in Kanazawa. Then he worked at the Ministry of Communication, and between 1925 and 1929 Atsumu held a concurrent post as professor of Tokyo University. Shigemitsu received Doctor of Engineering degree in 1930. For almost 20 years Shigemitsu has held executive positions in some firms.
