Career
Shigeru Sugiyama served in the New Guinea campaign in World War II (1943). He became dai-ichi keisatsu-sho (1st senior police officer) and chief of 3rd Department of Dai-ichi Bakuryo Kanbu (1st Staff Section) of Police Reserve Force (1952).
Appointed hoan-kan-ho (security inspector) of National Security Force (1953). Became general in Self-Defense Force (1954). Chief of Staff (since 1957) of Defense Agency.
