In his time, Noh drama had lost its past popularity and Shigeyama led a hard life. He was among the Imperial troops who were besieged in Kumamoto in the Saigo rebellion in 1877.
Later Chuzaburo had the honor of performing in the presence of Emperor Meiji and subsequently often performed in the palace. He became popular and counted among his disciples more than 300 persons in the upper classes in the Kyoto-Osaka area.
